An Interview with John M McMahon, Author of Limestone Waters

What inspired you to write this book?

Falling in love with my wife, Cheryl. The power of love is, well, powerful and life changing.

How much of the story is true?

I would say, maybe 40%. There was a lot of drug use in the 80s. I also had a friend who was a great storyteller who hung out at places like in the book. He told me many a salacious tale.

Is PTSD as bad as veterans say it is?

Yes, it is. I’m not a vet, but I have relatives who are forever changed by the war’s trauma. Anyone who has had traumatic events in their life, not just war vets, can suffer PTSD.

What are your thoughts on America’s war campaigns?

I would rather keep my personal opinions to myself. As Kurt Russell, the actor recently said, and I paraphrase, “We are court jesters, entertainers are. We can’t go around professing our personal beliefs. We are here to entertain.

If it was 1965 again would you join the war effort?

I was eight at the time, but my brother, Michael, he went over. The story is somewhat about him and me. what would happen if we can all find love, peace of mind and purpose in life!

Is there something you miss about the eighties?

Well, the carefree youth of it. I would not trade the wisdom of age, but the memories of friends gone by and fun times, they are warm and fuzzy looking through the lens of time.

What’s your advice to other authors in your genre?

Just do it. Block the time and make it as raunchy as you like. The world will let you know if it’s palatable. Have a message and interesting plot.

How long did it take to write this book?

My wife reminds me that I had been talking about this story since we were dating in 1985. In the early 90s, I wrote, maybe two pages of the opening chapter. Through the years, the story kept creeping back into my consciousness. Finally, when I retired, I got serious about writing. From that point, probably one and one half years writing and working with my editor.

What was your biggest motivator?

To get the story out of my head. I would have never been happy letting it stay there. And, for self fulfillment.

Where can your fans reach you and connect with you?
